This geometric response to the Isbon matchbox starting point cuts the picture plane into defined areas where subtle differences of line and colour interact to surround the extended central pictorial device. The white areas hold the piece together, not only serving to emphasise the subject matter, but to lead the eye around the composition. This piece is clearly a homage to modernism but it attempts to take this further to reference contemporary iconography. It speaks of design in the widest sense of the word and for me establishes links with the past, present and future.
Art should never be a closed shop. The artist has responsibility to acknowledge the influence of those who strove to enlighten us in the past, pioneers who gave us a vision of where we are now and where we can be; questions which are just as relevant today as in the past.
