When I was in Northern Spain once I was robbed by a dastardly gang of old ladies. This is really about hackers who steal your credit card details and identity so it’s not quite the same but it felt like it. Written in 2008.
VICTIMLESS CRIME
When some stranger asks you for the time
you’ve been the victim of a victimless crime,
when some hacker gets on your line
you’ve been the victim of a victimless crime.
When they clear out your bank account
don’t take it personal, give it some time,
keep your equilibrium, don’t use the Librium,
you’re just a victim of a victimless crime.
Know that it’s one person toiling all day
struggling to take your money away,
dripping with sweat to get to the top,
trying his hardest to make his own luck,
honestly making a dishonest buck.
How can you be so insensitive,
takers must take and givers must give,
don’t take it personal, give it some time,
You’re just a victim of a victimless crime.
Feel good when you struggle to sort out the mess
that your generosity means you have less,
it’s only money, not worth a dime,
you’re just a victim of a victimless crime.
You still have your health and integrity,
though you may be sharing your identity,
It’s just a pimple on the boil of time,
You’re just a victim of a victimless crime.
So don’t get upset, take it all in your stride,
only your credit cards have been denied,
No need to be so cross and so riled,
all of that anger will fade over time,
you’re just a victim of a victimless crime.
