The work on this series all took coffee sacks as a start for the collage of various fabrics on canvas. Leaving parts of the stencilled lettering seemed for me to increase their legitimacy as works of art. It spoke of the roots of their identity, both historic and cultural, a visual message incorporated in the fabric of the work itself. If we can simply classify ‘Abstract’ as a painting without subject, we certainly can’t classify it as a work without meaning.
