From the beginning of 2025 I have been embarking on a mission to create a body of work involving banners, produced in the same way as the much larger banners for the Art Al Vent international Textiles Art Festival which is held every year in the town of Gata De Gorgos, Spain. Here is one example. A wide selection of coloured and patterned fabric is cut out and stuck, piece by piece, onto a strip of heavy cotton calico. This takes a lot of time and of course a lot of collecting a very wide choice of fabric samples from commercially available as well as privately sourced swatches, old furnishing and garments, etc. On top of this the use of acrylic paint more often than not provides welcome areas of contrast, as here the circular forms are made from pre-painted calico, left to dry, cut to shape and incorporated in the overall design. You may notice in this banner the existance of a pink unicorn? Inpired by my three year old grandaughter who loves unicorns, this busy hanging art work does what most of my work eventually does: it operates in the space between the personal and public, the heart and the eye. I have produced around ten new banners so far of various sizes and hope to exhibit them in the future. this is my latest: VOGUE. Textile art banner. 2025. 66 x 192 cm.
